Check out our Newsletter/Blog at www.camn1.wordpress.com

Have you done something as a CAMN that was interesting and you would like to share it with others?  (Yes, we are interested in your experiences)  Email the picture or a quick write up about it to Martha and she will get it on the blog/newsletter.  Have you seen an usual insect, bird or plant/fungus?  Yes, that might be interesting to everyone also.  We can get to know one another by sharing what we are seeing out our windows. We can learn from one another and grow as CAMN.  It is our online scrapbook that others can flip through the pages and get to know us. Just maybe they will want to a part of CAMN.

Can YOU Survive in the Wilderness?

JULY 5 and 12 - Wilderness Survival Skills - Advanced Training. Thank you PMSP's Sarah Jones and Mike Thennes for teaching the classes. For two Saturdays a group of CAMNs learned the importance of purified water while hiking. Many ways to do this were demonstrated. We saw a tarp transformed into a survival tent. Then we hiked to a previously build A-frame bough shelter to see first hand how to locate a good site, gather materials, and plan your survival. The next Saturday we met and saw the dynamics of fire making using a variety of materials. We used bow starters, strikers, and magnifying glasses to start fires. Again, thanks to the wonderful teachers we had those two days for teaching us many important facts necessary to survive in the wilderness.

June 14 was Trails Day

Master Naturalist Linda is showing Master Naturalist Bert some of the plants that the greenhouse committee had for sale as our fundraiser.

Horses, planes, bears and raccoons roamed the park that day.  Our CAMNers braved the heat to become Resource Raccoon and Smokey Bear.

May 31 was our Advanced Training on Mushrooms. Fungus Among Us
was held at Woolly Hollow State Park
 with Master Naturalist Jay Justice.

Black Chanterelles were our target mushrooms.
We all found some to take home and try.  They were delicious!

When a group of Master Naturalists get together, the learning and fun starts.
We had a great time and were very grateful for Jay's expertise.

BioBliz at Gillam Park May 3

Our May 3 BioBlitz was a great success at Gillam Park.  Sixty-five people attended, including 10 high school students and 36 Master Naturalists.  The BioBliz was an opportunity for us to help inventory the new Little Rock Nature Center at Gillam Park while celebrating the graduation of CAMN Class of 2008.  During the BioBlitz one of the teams found a rare black-billed cuckoo.  Thanks to CAMN Lavada Pierce for capturing this picture for us.

Master Naturalist Discovers Prehistoric Rock Art

Master Naturalist Don Higgins, who donates the majority of his volunteer hours to Petit Jean State Park, made an amazing discovery while working in the field on a project he created for himself. Don stumbled upon this previously undiscovered treasure at an undisclosed location within the parks boundaries. Congratulations Don!

UPDATE:  Don has been exploring and finding new plants and pictographs around the Petit Jean area.  He is an inspiration to us all to find our own volunteer project that uses the training CAMN provides.
